There are 4 medical treatments for hair loss that are currently effective. Three slow down hair loss or help stop hair loss, while only one – surgical hair transplantation – brings a significant amount of hair back.
Minoxidil – the active ingredient in Rogaine, minoxidil can slow down hair loss throughout the top of the head for women and in the back or “crown” area for men. It does not typically regrow significant amounts of hair, but rather slows the progression of hair loss. Advantage: inexpensive Disadvantages: cream or foam that many dislike using daily, and permanently. Additionally, it does not work for all patients now does it work well in the front of the scalp for men
Propecia – this is a prescription pill that slows loss for most men in the back or “crown” area and works to a lesser extent in the front of the scalp. It is taken daily. Advantage: easy to use, works well in most men. Disadvantages: does not typically regrow much hair and must be used daily and permanently. More costly than Rogaine.Should not be used by women. Possible, rare, non-permanent examples of men experiencing decreased libido.
Laser Light Therapy – this is an in-office or at-home use laser “helmet” that slows loss equally in the front and back of the scalp using tiny cool laser diodes (the patient feels nothing and there are no side effects). Used for a number of sessions over a 6 month to 1 year period, most patients slow down hair loss or stop hair loss. A smaller percentage have the finer hair on their head thicken, while other patients do not experience this. Advantages: no side effects. Works on the front and back of the scalp equally. Results are cumulative so patients may not need to continue use permanently. Disadvantages: must be used 2 times a week for 3 months for 20-30 minutes, then just 1 time per week for 3 months, and then 1-2 times per month for maintenance.
Surgical Hair Restoration – This is the “Gold Standard” and the only true way to replace follicles that have been lost due to male or female pattern hair loss. Dr. Epstein specializes in all forms of hair restoration (FUE, FUT/Strip) and has performed over 9,000 of these procedures over 16 years. This is typically a 1-day out-patient procedure performed under local anesthesia by Dr. Epstein and his staff of 19 full time surgical assistants. By selecting donor hair from the back of the head, and placing it, once dissected into individual follicles, into areas of hair loss (up to 60 or more hairs into a single square centimeter), Dr. Epstein is able to achieve the ultimate naturalness and density possible within this field of expertise. Minimal risk and necessary follow-up, coupled with the unsurpassed naturalness now achievable with current technology and the artistry of a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon specializing in hair restoration like Dr. Epstein, make this procedure the ideal choice for many men and women hoping to achieve a more youthful look.
