Hymen restoration, called hymenoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery procedure intended to restore the integrity of a torn hymen, which is the thin, ring-like skin membrane that partially covers the opening of the vagina. The hymen is typically torn when a woman experiences her first intercourse, and this procedure will put the tissue together in a “virgin-like” quality. Rarely, a woman’s hymen may be accidentally torn while inserting a tampon or during sports. While there is little evidence of any biological purpose for the hymen, in certain cultural, ethnic and religious communities, having an intact hymen is deemed to be very important.
Good candidates
If you desire hymen re-creation and you are physically healthy, psychologically stable, and have realistic expectations, a hymen restoration procedure may be appropriate for you.
How the procedure is performed
Hymen restoration is performed under IV sedation with local anesthesia or general anesthesia in our Boca Raton accredited in-office surgery suite on an outpatient basis. The type of anesthesia used will be discussed at your consultation. The surgery involves the creation of a hymen using tissue that is already present and takes approximately one hour to complete. The sutures are absorbable and the scars are not visible to the naked eye.
What to expect during recovery
During the recovery period, there is minimal discomfort. Normal activities can be resumed the next day, driving in 2 days and sexual activity can be resumed once healing is confirmed.
