Procedure overview

A Lip Lift is performed to return the upper lip skin, muscle and underlying tissues to a more youthful contour for cosmetic reasons. As we age, our upper lip begins to droop - you may notice in older people that when they speak, you no longer see their top teeth but only the lower teeth. This is due to the drooping of the upper lip. The lift lip elevates the position of the upper lip to give a more youthful smile. The lips may also be augmented with dermal filler, collagen or fat during the procedure to result in a more aesthetically pleasing lip shape. Patient satisfaction with lip lifts is extremely high.

If you’re considering a lip lift, it’s important to understand that the texture of your skin will not be modified by the lip lift procedure. If you have extensive wrinkling around the lips due to heredity, smoking or sun exposure, this can be treated with laser skin resurfacing before or in conjunction with a lip lift procedure to improve the texture of the skin and to minimize the recurrence of wrinkles in the lip area. This will be discussed in your consultation. Rest assured, we know how to create the most attractive result for your particular needs.

Good candidates

A lip lift is needed when injectable fillers no longer give the results that you seek or, in discussion with your surgeon, you mutually decide that a more permanent solution is best for you. Because a lip lift can be done to address poorly shaped lips at any age, this procedure can be done on any healthy adult.

How the procedure is performed

Lip lift procedures are performed under local anesthesia in our Boca Raton accredited in-office surgery suite on an outpatient basis. If performed during another facial cosmetic procedure, it may be done under general anesthesia. During the procedure, an incision is placed just beneath the nose and a small strip of skin and tissue is removed. The lip is then elevated to a new position to expose about 1/8” of teeth.  Should it be needed, dermal filler, fat or collagen can be injected into the lips to give an overall fuller appearance. The procedure takes about an hour.

What to expect during recovery

For a lip lift procedure, recovery time is 2-4 days, and slightly longer if additional procedures were done. You will experience some swelling and bruising which can be relieved with pain medication and ice packs. Most patients are back to full activity within a few days.
