Patients with sagging breasts are often reluctant to undergo breast lift due to unsightly scarring. Breast lift surgery was traditionally done with an anchor incision, i.e. a scar around the areola, a vertical scar and a scar along the breast crease. In recent years techniques have evolved that allows the surgeon to eliminate the horizontal breast fold scar. A vertical incision combined with an incision around the areola is used. This technique is commonly known as the lollipop incision. Although much improved from the anchor scar, the vertical scar is still of concern to many patients.
More recently the circum-areola technique has been developed. This technique utilizes an incision around the areola only. The circum-areolar mastopexy, commonly known as the Benelli procedure works well in most cases. However in some cases the scar stretches, becomes raised, or the suture holding the skin in position ruptures resulting in a sudden increase in size of the areola.
Dr. Hilton Becker has developed a technique that addresses these problems, thus significantly reducing the scar around the areola.
The Scarless Breast Lift technique consists of:
1) The Use of the Sub Areolar Mastopexy procedure (Published by Dr. Becker in The Plastic Surgery Journal). This technique places the tension on the deep tissue under the areola using multiple permanent sutures. The reduction in tension reduces stretching and hypertrophy of the scar. Sudden disruption is reduced due to the multiple sutures that hold the tissues in position.
2) The Use of Internal Mesh Support. Dr. Becker uses either a permanent fine mesh or an absorbable mesh as a hammock or "internal bra" to elevate and support the breast tissue. The mesh helps improve the shape of the breast and offer further support to the breast tissue.
Although scars are never invisible, Dr. Becker is usually able to significantly reduce scarring in breast lift procedures using these techniques.
For patients who wish to increase the volume of the breast at the same time as the breast lift, the "Gummy Bear " silicone gel implant or the adjustable saline implant which Dr. Becker developed. When the adjustable implant is used, it is initially under filled. This further reduces tension and stretching of the scar. Once healing has started the implant can be filled to the correct size with the patient input.
Frequently Asked Questions on the Scarless Breast Lift Who is the ideal candidate for this procedure? Women who have mild to moderate ptosis (breast sagging) often times as a result of multiple pregnancies and weight loss. How long does the procedure take? Approximately 2hours - 3 hours if an implant is used. How long is the down time following this procedure? There is no more down town than with a regular lift - patients can usually can go back to exercising within 4-6 weeks. What is the success rate of this procedure? The majority of our patients that have had this procedure are extremely happy with their results, as well as the long term results. Why do you prefer this method over traditional breast lift techniques? There is virtually no scaring (no anchor scarring) and the breast tissue has better long term lift with the use of the internal mesh bra. Often times if a patient is happy with the size of their breasts in a bra (preoperatively) but just want a lift, breast implants may not be necessary. This can be done by positioning the breast tissue and holding that breast tissue up with the internal mesh bra - known as auto augmentation.
