A labial reduction is a plastic surgery procedure that reduces the size of the labia minora, also called the inner labia, or the labia majora, called the outer labia. It is performed for women whose labia are elongated, protruding or asymmetrical, causing sexual or social embarrassment or painful swelling prohibiting exercise, spinning, sweating or sexual intercourse. In addition, the outer labia (majora) can be either augmented or reduced to produce a desired cosmetic appearance.

Good candidates

If you're experiencing the problems noted above, but you are otherwise healthy, emotionally stable and have realistic expectations, a labiaplasty procedure may be appropriate for you. This cosmetic procedure is rarely covered by insurance, although if you are experiencing labial protrusion to the extent that it interferes with your ability to wear a swimsuit or underwear without discomfort, or you are uncomfortable sitting, all or part of your procedure may be reimbursed by your health insurance coverage. This can be discussed at your consultation.

How the procedure is performed

Labiaplasties are performed under either IV sedation or general anesthesia in our Boca Raton accredited in-office surgery suite on an outpatient basis. After anesthesia has been instilled, the excess skin of the labia is removed and the ends sutured. The length of the procedure ranges from 45 minutes to an hour.

What to expect during recovery

During the recovery period, there is generally minimal pain and swelling. Ice packs can be applied and Tylenol is generally adequate to control discomfort. Normal activities can be resumed the next day and sexual activities in three to four weeks.
