Nose Reshaping Surgery for Teens
According to the most recent report by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number one cosmetic procedure performed among teens is rhinoplasty, more commonly known as a “nose job,” making up 45% of all teen plastic surgery procedures. More than 35,000 American teens had a rhinoplasty in 2012.
The nose is quite literally the center of your face. It naturally attracts a lot of attention, and is not only the first thing you see in a mirror, but commonly what others see as well. It sets the tone for your whole appearance. As a result, the shape and size of the nose have a more negative (or positive!) effect on self-image than any other facial feature, at just about any age. This is the reason that nose jobs are so highly requested by teens, as well as by adults.
It is usually an outpatient procedure. This means you go to where the surgery is done and then go home the same day. Rhinoplasty can be very simple or very complex. When done correctly by an experienced surgeon, it can make a big difference in how you look—as well as the way you breathe. This is called “functional rhinoplasty,” because it makes sure the nose functions works as well as it looks.
Honest communication between the teenage patient, his or her parents, and the surgeon is very important. It’s important that the teen wants the surgery for the right reasons.
While some teenage patients seek a rhinoplasty in order to fix functional issues, such as breathing problems or to repair a deviated septum, others want to improve the shape of their nose to improve their self-esteem. Some patients need or want both! With the help of Sanctuary Medical Center’s Board Certified Plastic Surgeons, young rhinoplasty patients can achieve the nose they want and avoid years of self-image problems or emotional distress and improve their social interactions to make the most of these years they will remember forever.
When Can Teens Have Rhinoplasty?
Nose surgery should be performed on teens once the face has reached its adult size. This is typically at about age 15-16 for females, and 16-18 for males. However, patients who have noses which are causing breathing issues, significant teasing, or other social problems may have surgery much younger.
What Are Some of the Types of Rhinoplasty?
Types of Rhinoplasty include:
- Removing a hump on the nose
- Straightening the bridge
- Reshaping the tip of the nose
- Increasing or decreasing the size of the nostrils
- Fixing the nose after an injury
- Opening breathing passages
- Increase or decrease in size
The best time for a teen to undergo Rhinoplasty surgery is usually during the summer when they have plenty of time to recuperate and relax. But recovery is often shorter than you think and may be done over winter or spring breaks. While the nose will look better almost immediately, it takes a few months for the final results, so plan ahead for important pictures or events.
