Breast augmentation with breast implants is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to either enlarge the breasts or to create symmetry if one breast is noticeably different in size and shape from the other breast. At the time of this writing, all breast implants are made of a silicone outer shell and are filled with either saline or silicone. They come in a broad variety of sizes and shapes to fit everybody. If breasts are uneven in size, a different size of implant in each breast can easily be accomplished. Breast augmentation is a safe procedure that results in long-lasting, realistically larger breasts.

An important consideration about breast implants is that they should be in proportion to your body to create the most attractive result rather than looking false and unrealistic. Although breast implants are not permanent, they generally last 10-15 years, so choices made prior to surgery will be with you for many years. Choosing a breast size based on a popular look or trend may be unsatisfactory over time and extremely large breasts will droop sooner than breasts with smaller implants. Our surgeons will work with you to create the best possible result so that your breasts are in balance with the rest of your body.
Good Candidates for Breast Augmentation
If you are physically healthy, psychologically stable, and have realistic expectations, you will be a good candidate. Age is a consideration, as our surgeons do not perform breast augmentation surgery on women younger than the age of 18 unless there are clear physical reasons to do so. Some women develop later than others and inserting breast implants in a teen may result in an overly large contour within only a few years. However, for a teen who has had absolutely no breast development or who suffers from breast deformities, a consultation with one of our surgeons can help you decide if a breast augmentation is indeed, right for your teen-aged daughter. If you are over the age of 35, your surgeon will ask you to have a baseline mammogram so that you have an "original mapping" of your breasts as they appeared prior to implant surgery. Any abnormalities identified on the mammogram must be addressed prior to your procedure. If your breasts are sagging your surgeon may recommend a breast lift along with the implant to create appropriate projection.
How Breast Augmentation is Performed
Breast augmentation procedures are performed under general anesthesia in our Boca Raton accredited in-office surgery suite on an outpatient basis. The method of inserting and positioning your implant depends a great deal on your anatomy, though the incision is generally placed in the areola or the crease under the breast. Insertion can also be accomplished through the armpit. After the incision has been made, a pocket is created into which the implant is placed. This may be directly behind the existing breast tissue or underneath the muscles of the chest wall (the pectoral muscle). The implants are then centered beneath your nipples and the incisions closed with dissolvable sutures over which tape is applied for greater support. The length of the procedure ranges from one to two hours. Read About the No-Touch Breast Implant Insertion Technique.
What to Expect After Your Breast Augmentation Surgery
Following your breast implant procedure, we will recommend that you wear a supportive bra 24 hours a day until the surgery sites have healed completely, which may be up to a month. You will be sore at first, but after about a week you'll feel well again and fully healed in about 6-8 weeks. Although results are immediate, due to swelling and settling, the final results will not be apparent for about 3-4 months. After the procedure, we recommend that you avoid lifting your arms over your head as well as any exercise or activity that uses your chest muscles for a period of 4-6 weeks. You'll come back into the office within the first few days for your first postoperative visit at which time you'll be examined to be sure everything is going as it should. Please bear in mind that breast implants are not permanent. Every few years you should schedule an appointment with your surgeon to insure that the implants are still working well. In particular, silicone-filled implants can rupture without your even knowing it so for this reason in particular, we recommend an MRI every two years to be done to confirm viability of the implant.
