Liposuction is a surgical procedure performed on adult men and women that removes excess fat beneath the skin. Liposuction is often the ideal procedure for removing unsightly saddlebags and love handles or resculpting the upper arms, calves, around the knees, the outer breast area, the back, and the face, including beneath the chin, neck, and cheeks. Liposuction is not a weight-loss tool but is a treatment to remove fatty areas that have not responded to your best efforts with exercise and diet for weight loss.
Advanced Liposuction Treatments for Superior Results and Faster Recovery
Liposuction continues to become more refined, with advanced systems able to create more precise results and a quicker recovery. At Sanctuary Plastic Surgery, we offer multiple types of liposuction technology, including tumescent technique also known as SAL or suction-assisted lipoplasty; VASER, a type of UAL or ultrasonic-assisted lipoplasty; LAL or laser-assisted lipoplasty also known by brand names of ProLipo or Smartlipo, and RFAL or radiofrequency assisted lipoplasty, enabling us to create a bespoke treatment plan that is customized to your lifestyle, body type, and unique individual goals.
Is Liposuction Right for Me?
Liposuction remains one of the most effective methods for removing excess fat. The procedure is 100 percent customized and can resculpt any of the following body areas:
- Bulging tummy
- Excess fat on and beneath the buttocks
- Love handles
- Fatty arms
- Fatty knees
- Back or bra fat
- Double chin
- Fatty neck
Why Choose Sanctuary Plastic Surgery?
If you are unhappy with your figure and are plagued by excess fat that won’t disappear no matter how dedicated you are to diet and exercise, you may be considering liposuction. Not all plastic surgery centers offer the advanced lipo systems we use at Sanctuary Plastic Surgery, and our goal is to create “results from every angle.” Dr. Pozner, who helms our practice, is among the most accomplished and experienced plastic surgeons in the industry and has earned his reputation by consistently creating incredible results for patients in Boca Raton, West Palm Beach, and the nearby areas. Reach out and set up your consultation today—we'll work closely with you to build a relationship and your customized surgical plan at the very same time.
Resculpt Your Body with Custom Liposuction
If you're located in Boca Raton, West Palm Beach, or the nearby areas, and you're physically healthy, psychologically stable, and have realistic expectations, you're a great candidate for liposuction at Sanctuary Plastic Surgery. The best candidates are at a healthy weight and have firm, elastic skin in the areas of excess fat. Age is not a particular consideration, though older patients may lack skin elasticity and may require more than a younger patient with tighter skin.
Depending on your age, your custom liposuction plan may include a tummy tuck or other procedure to tighten the skin as well as remove fat from those stubborn areas. Patients of all ages can take advantage of minimally invasive liposuction developments that use radio frequency and ultrasound technologies to more gently eliminate fat while leaving much smaller incisions. Dr. Pozer can help tailor a plan for your custom liposuction based on your lifestyle and needs.
What Types of Liposuction Will Work Best for My Body?
If you're near your goal weight, do not have excess loose skin and have established a routine of healthy diet and exercise, a minimally invasive procedure like BodyTite that melts fat and tightens skin may be best for you. For those who have experienced significant weight loss and have excess skin as well as final pockets of fat to eliminate, a tummy tuck plus liposuction may be best for you. Moms who have finished having kids and would like helping getting their bodies back to a toned shape can benefit from liposuction as part of a Mommy Makeover.
Liposuction carries a higher risk for people who have medical problems such as diabetes, heart or lung disease, poor circulation, or who have had recent surgery in the area to be treated. It is not the right choice for smokers, as smoking diminishes the blood supply. If you’re a smoker and wish to have liposuction, you’ll need to quit smoking for at least two weeks before the procedure and at least two weeks afterward. (Better yet, quit smoking for good and enjoy the many rewards!)
What Is the Procedure Like?
Liposuction procedures are performed in our Boca Raton accredited in-office surgery suite on an outpatient basis. If only a small area is to be treated, local anesthesia or local anesthesia along with IV sedation may be administered, so you are comfortable and relaxed during the procedure. If a large area needs treatment, we may perform the procedure with general or epidural anesthesia. The choice of anesthesia is made depending on which liposuction method is right for you. When liposuction is combined with another treatment, such as an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), general anesthesia may be needed.
The scars from liposuction are small and strategically placed, so they are hidden from view once you have healed. Minor imperfections in the final appearance can exist. The skin surface may be irregular, asymmetric, or appear “baggy” in an older patient with less skin flexibility. Numbness and pigmentation changes could occur. Sometimes, additional surgery will resolve these conditions.
After Liposuction—What to Expect?
Don’t expect to feel your best immediately after your liposuction. Although newer techniques can reduce some post-operative discomfort, you may still experience some pain, burning, swelling, bleeding, and temporary numbness. Any discomfort or pain can be controlled with prescription medication, but you may feel stiff and sore for a few days.
After the surgery, you will likely experience some fluid drainage from the incisions. To control swelling and help your skin better fit its new contours, you may be fitted with a snug elastic garment to wear over the treated area for a few weeks. We typically prescribe antibiotics to prevent infection.
Your Recovery and Healing
Your surgeon will give you instructions for showering and changing the dressing, and we will see you for a post-treatment appointment at our office a few days post-surgery. Healing is a gradual process. We recommend that you start walking around as soon as possible to reduce swelling and to help prevent blood clots from forming in your legs. You will begin to feel better after about a week or two, and you should be back at work within a few days following a lipo-sculpting procedure. If stitches were used, they would be removed or dissolve on their own within the first week to 10 days.
Back to Your Exercise Routine: The Time Frame
For small-volume liposuction, we will have you back in the gym within just a few days. For larger volumes, we may have you avoid more strenuous exercise for about a few weeks to a month as your body heals. Although most bruising and swelling usually disappear within three weeks, some swelling may remain for six months or more. If you have any concerns, we will ask you to come to our office to evaluate your condition and ensure your recovery is proceeding as it should. We are always available and responsive.
