Is the Size of Your Breasts Affecting Your Life Negatively?

Gynecomastia, the condition of overdeveloped breast tissue in men, affects men of all sizes and ages. While the exact cause is unknown, heredity and hormonal changes play a significant role. Being overweight often increases the levels of estrogen in your body, which can cause your breast tissue to grow. Some men are too embarrassed about the size of their breasts to go to the gym or exercise in public, making it even harder to lose excess weight.

Male Breast Reduction in Boca Raton - A Highly Individualized Procedure

For overweight or obese men, breast reduction surgery poses a few additional challenges. It is important that your surgeon is highly skilled and experienced to be able to personalize your procedure to fit your unique personal circumstances. Dr. Jacobs has over 30 years of experience as a surgeon and specializes in gynecomastia. Before your surgery, he will give you a thorough physical examination followed by a detailed discussion of your aesthetic goals and what results you can realistically expect.

What Are My Options?

Depending on your circumstances and your goals, you have a few different options when it comes to breast reduction surgery. There is no doubt that you will be able to achieve the best possible results if you lose weight before your surgery, as opposed to after.

If you lose a significant amount of weight after surgery, your results may be compromised, as your skin will be looser, and your nipples may droop. Additionally, being at a healthy weight makes you a better surgical candidate and your recovery will most likely be quicker and smoother.

Your options include:

  • Losing weight and getting to a healthy, comfortable weight before surgery. This way any loose skin can be addressed immediately, and the nipple can be repositioned if needed.
  • Having breast reduction surgery without addressing any loose skin, allowing the skin to tighten naturally. After 6-8 months we will reevaluate, only tightening your skin and repositioning the nipple if it is still needed. This option has the benefit of minimal scarring.
  • If the size of your breasts is preventing you from exercising and thus from losing weight, you may wish to go ahead with surgery to minimize the size of your breasts. While your results won’t be perfect, you will be more comfortable, making it easier to lose weight.

Will My Gynecomastia Disappear When I Lose Weight?

Gynecomastia is composed of both fat and breast tissue. As you lose weight, your fat cells will shrink, while the breast tissue stays the same. This means that your breasts will shrink in size overall, but the excess breast tissue will not disappear. As your body shrinks, your breasts will still be large in proportion to the rest of your body. Gynecomastia surgery will remove the excess breast tissue, and it should not return. In over 30 years of performing gynecomastia surgery, Dr. Jacobs has never witnessed a recurrence.
