What Are The Different Types of Liposuction?
For a time, there was only one option for liposuction. It involved the manual disruption of stubborn fat deposits with a hollow tube, before suctioning it out of the body. While traditional liposuction is still a great option for many patients, modern technical advances have led to a variety of highly-effective techniques that are less invasive, involve a shorter recovery period, and provide exceptional results.
At Sanctuary Plastic Surgery, we combine the most advanced and effective technologies available with the knowledge, skill, and experience of some of the finest board-certified plastic surgeons in the nation. We take the time to understand your unique goals, and customize treatment plans tailored specifically for you.
Your Liposuction Options at Sanctuary Plastic Surgery
Sanctuary Plastic Surgery offers a variety of liposuction options, including:
- Suction-assisted liposuction (SAL): In traditional suction-assisted liposuction, a mixture of saline water, lidocaine, and epinephrine known as tumescent fluid, is injected into the treatment area. The tumescent fluid causes the treated area to stiffen and swell. A thin tube, called a cannula, is then inserted through a small incision, and the fat and fluids are suctioned out with a vacuum device.
- Laser-assisted liposuction (LAL): ProLipo™ is a minimally-invasive laser-assisted liposuction treatment. During the procedure, a tiny laser fiber is used to liquify targeted fat cells, which are then removed with suction, although some smaller areas do not require suction. This results in less bruising and a quicker recovery. Laser liposuction is typically used on smaller areas like the neck that benefit from the added precision of the ProLipo technique.
- Ultrasonic-assisted liposuction (UAL): VASERlipo®, also referred to as VASER LipoSelection, is a minimally-invasive treatment that uses gentle ultrasound energy to aid the fat-removal process. During the procedure, safe sound waves liquify fatty deposits, making them easier to remove through the cannula. The process is gentle enough to smooth and define small areas, yet strong enough to treat large areas of the body.
- Radiofrequency-assisted liposuction (RFAL): In addition to tumescent fluid, this technique utilizes radiofrequency energy to breakdown unwanted fat, which is then removed through a cannula. Radiofrequency-assisted liposuction is effective at not only eliminating stubborn pockets of diet-and-exercise-resistant fat, it also tightens the skin for improved body contours.
The best way to determine which body contouring procedure is right for you is to meet personally with a board-certified plastic surgeon at Sanctuary Plastic Surgery. During your initial consultation, your physical condition will be evaluated, your medical history will be reviewed, and your ideal liposuction technique will be discussed and determined.
