How Buttock Augmentation Is Performed

Harvard-trained plastic surgeon Dr. Dan Del Vecchio performs both the fat grafting and the silicone implant procedures using a local or general anesthesia. Depending on the patient’s needs, a procedure typically lasts one to two hours. The fat grafting method relies on liposuction to remove excess fat from other areas of the body, such as the thighs or abdomen. After the fat goes through a purification process, it is then injected into different areas of the buttocks to achieve the desired look. Silicone implant augmentation requires a small, two-inch incision to the upper buttocks for proper implant insertion. Most commonly, dissolvable sutures are used for healing and then a compression bandage is applied.

What to Expect During Buttock Augmentation Recovery

Fat grafting patients recover within a relatively quick timeframe of two weeks. However, a majority of patients should expect varying degrees of swelling and bruising for up to six weeks after surgery. A compression garment is recommended at home to control swelling and discomfort.

Most patients are able to resume work one to two weeks post-procedure, although direct sitting on the buttocks should be avoided in the first two weeks.
